What is new

Labor Day (May 1) and Constitution Day (July 17) are on the official public holiday list. In 2027 both fall on a Saturday, so the following Mondays — May 3 and July 19 — are substitute holidays.

Substitute holidays

For most holidays, a Saturday or Sunday means the next weekday becomes a substitute holiday (대체공휴일). For Seollal and Chuseok only a Sunday or another holiday counts — which is why Seollal 2027, with one day on a Saturday and one on a Sunday, gets one substitute day. New Year’s Day and Memorial Day never get one, so Memorial Day on Sunday, June 6 is not replaced.

Do I get the day off?

Government offices, banks and most offices close on these days, and workplaces with 5 or more employees must give paid leave on public holidays. Shops, restaurants and smaller workplaces may stay open — check your contract. During Seollal and Chuseok many small shops and restaurants close and trains sell out fast.
