Seollal and Chuseok

The two biggest holidays follow the lunar calendar, so their dates change every year. Each is a three-day break: the day before, the day itself and the day after. Many people travel to their hometowns, so trains and highways are packed and many small shops and restaurants close. Book train tickets as soon as holiday sales open — they sell out fast.

Substitute holidays

When Seollal or Chuseok falls on a Sunday or overlaps another holiday, the next weekday becomes a substitute holiday. For most other holidays, a Saturday or Sunday also triggers a substitute holiday. New Year’s Day and Memorial Day do not get substitute holidays.

Do I get the day off?

These are official public holidays. Government offices, banks and most offices close, and workplaces with 5 or more employees must give paid leave on public holidays. Shops, restaurants and smaller workplaces may stay open — check your contract.

Based on the official 2027 calendar announced by the Korea AeroSpace Administration, including Labor Day and Constitution Day as public holidays.
